Peels aftercare
To enjoy the best results from your skin peel and to avoid any adverse reactions it is important to follow your aftercare instructions.
Following your treatment, the newly exposed skin cells are still fresh and your skin is vulnerable to developing irritation or infection. Therefore, careful precautions must be taken to prevent complications and to ensure the best results.
It is a risk with any chemical peel that the skin can become red, tight and may peel. Your Dermal Therapist will advise you on any potential downtime following your peel.
Immediately after some peels, your skin will likely have a red, tight, ‘sunburned’ appearance and may feel warm and tender for several hours. This is a normal skin response and should subside in the next 24 to 72 hours. You can apply a cool clean face cloth for comfort.
Redness will settle and is usually replaced by dry, tight skin. This will shed over the next 7 days. You must not pick, scratch or use any exfoliating products as this may damage the new skin and introduce bacteria, leading to skin infections, hyperpigmentation and scarring.
For the 24 hours following your peel:
Keep the area clean
Regularly apply Contra Derm cream or barrier cream, as required
Avoid sun exposure and hot environments/steam
Avoid makeup.
For the 3 days following your peel:
Avoid AHAs, BHAs, retinols, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid
Switch to a gentle cleanser that has been recommended by your Cosmetic Nurse or Dermal Therapist
Apply hydrating moisturiser as part of your skincare routine or anytime your skin is feeling dry
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen
Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools and spas, strenuous exercise, sweating, and saunas
If you require makeup, use a quality mineral makeup and remember to clean makeup brushes regularly
(following lactic glycolic peels) Apply Skinceuticals HA Intensifier Serum.
For the 2 weeks following your peel:
After 5 days you may re-introduce your regular skin care regime
Avoid facials, peels, laser hair removal or waxing in the area
Avoid excessive sun exposure
Apply a quality SPF 30+ sunscreen every day, such as O’Cosmedics SPF 50+
Optional: Take a quality collagen supplement, such as Vita-Sol Collagen Boost.
